Perfect Companionship of Man and Dog

Around 12,000 years ago, the first dog domesticated by man was a wolf. The remains found in the mountains of Idaho and those found in Europe, Asia and pre-Columbian America all belong to the same period of time. The companionship among man and dog is one of the oldest and most lasting in history upon this earth.

In fact, the wolf is a wild dog, a member of the scientific family Canidae, that includes domestic dogs as well as other dog-like wild animals such as foxes and jackals. Scientists believe that wolves are the direct ancestors of today's domestic dogs. They think that early humans domesticated wild wolves to make them useful companions including working animals. Since then selective breeding has produced the varieties of domestic dogs, and some of them turn to be not like wolf in habit and appearance.

When the first relationship among human and dog started, humans were hunter-gatherer. They lived their lives in group and used natural shelter such as cave. Hunting for food required physical strength. It was the tasks for male. While the women took care for the cooking and their babies. Likewise, wolves lived in extended family group. There was a hierarchy and a pack leader. The wolves use natural shelter and made foray to hunt like animal. Females gave births and took care their cubs. While the males protected their family and provided food.

As wolves and humans were hunters, they had to compete with each other to live on. The wolves had their advantage of the acute sense of smell to track down its prey easily. The human might follow the wolves and took an advantage by taking over the carcass. On the other hand, wolves might follow the humans and picked up any scraps the human left behind.

Later on, humans developed a distinct advantage over their canine competitor. Humans invented primitive weapon, which made the hunting more effectively. They started to live in a proper place while the wolves came to live around the human's camp. Years passing, men began to use of the wolves' hunting and scenting ability and, of course, at the same time the wolves learnt to protect humans. In return wolves were given food as a reward.

Over a period of time, wolves have lived much closer to humans. The relationship became much more relaxed and learned to live together better. Dogs and humans found mutual benefit from the loose association which developed through the period of time. They became closer and closer. Humans might adopt puppies that had a natural instinct to obey the pack leader. Puppies learned to obey humans from this instinct.
